P272 & P322 – Latest moons found orbiting Pluto? No, they are the latest energy industry rule changes supported by OFGEM. They are a little confusing & do have some cost implications, but there is a silver lining.
P272 & P322 in 30 seconds
P272 affects any organisation with a metering profile of 05, 06, 07 and 08. You can find this out by looking at the first two digits of your S Number (the pink ones below) this can be found on your latest bill.
There are an estimated 160,000 meters across the UK that will be affected by this regulation.
The energy industry has decided between now and April 2017 these meters need an upgrade to become ‘Half Hourly’ meters. This will enable the industry to get a better ‘picture’ of a business’s energy usage and produce more accurate billing, this is positive but…
Doing this will potentially add extra contractual costs which are –
Meter Operator Contracts (MOPs)
Covering rental/maintanence of your smart meters.
Data Collector / Data Aggregator Contracts (DC/DA)
Covering the collection and communication of meter data.
Meaning additional energy cost headaches for businesses. MOP and DC/DA contracts can range from one year to ten years and the details vary greatly dependent on the provider. A poor decision could end up costing thousands.
The recently announced P322 is an extension of P272, which recognises the enormity of the task, moving the contractual upgrade requirement for some businesses from the original April 2016 to an April 2017 target date.
