COP26 & Net Zero

Coal to be no more come 2024

The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. This is a huge and important event that will be attended by Heads of State and climate experts to agree what action is needed to tackle climate change. Despite 70% of the world’s economy now committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, there is still a lot needed to ensure that we meet these ambitious targets and businesses need to play their part.

Summary of the goals

There are four main goals that need to be achieved at COP26 in order to ensure that we reduce our carbon production and keep on track to reach net zero emissions by 2050:

  • Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
  • Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
  • Mobilise finance
  • Work together to deliver

What is expected of organisations?

There are a few things that larger organisations can do to reduce their carbon emissions and look at energy saving measures that they can adopt. The Government are asking for businesses to make commitments to support their target of reducing emissions by committing to the race to zero. There are lots of ways that your business can take action and ensure that you are prioritising climate action. Below are some of the ways that we can help.

ESOS

The Government’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is aimed at large commercial businesses and is an initiative to lower carbon emissions and requires organisations to assess their energy consumption at least every four years. Although this will involve some costs and time to complete, it could open up opportunities for future savings for your business.

SECR

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) is a good way for your business to look at becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This is another Government scheme that builds on requirements for those organisations who are already reporting under the ESOS scheme.

How can smaller businesses do their bit?

There are also opportunities available for smaller organisations who are looking to adapt and be more energy efficient. This could include carrying out an audit of the energy consumed, which will allow you to see what areas you can improve and how you can make your business greener and more sustainable. You could look at simple energy saving measures that your staff can start by doing, such as making sure lights are always switched off when not in use, switching to re-usable coffee cups, walking to work or using public transport. Simple measures can save 10% immediately with little or no investment.
