How to grow and look after your Sunflowers

We hope you like your gift and enjoy watching your Sunflowers grow. We have put together some of our top tips on how to plant your seeds and grow your flowers.

The sunflower is one of the most loved and recognised flowers in the UK. They are a beautiful flower that symbolise happiness, positivity and also align with one of our company values, Happiness First!

When to plant your seeds:

The best time to plant your seeds is usually around mid-April to the end of May. They bloom from Summer into Autumn and can take 11-18 weeks to flower. They are easy to grow and can grow up to two metres in height.

What tools to use:

  • Small plant pots
  • Compost
  • Gardening trowel
  • Sunflower seeds

How to grow your Sunflowers:

  1. Sunflowers prefer to grow in a sunny but sheltered spot in the garden, with good soil. It’s a good idea to sow seeds in pots from April and re-plant them after any risk of frost has passed from early June.
  2. Plant each seed into individual pots, usually one seed per 7.5cm pot. Fill each pot with compost and make a hole in the middle of the compost with your finger. Plant a seed into the hole, around 1.5cm deep. Give your seeds a good water.
  3. Once the seeds are in the pots, cover them with a clear plastic bag and place them in a cool, bright place. You will need to keep them well watered until they are ready to be planted in the soil.
  4. When you re-plant them into the soil you can use a bamboo cane or something similar to stake the plants and encourage them to grow upwards. Use some string to tie the plant onto the cane to help support it.
  5. Then all that’s left is to watch your Sunflowers grow!
