You may have seen the latest news from the Government that new homes will be required to have EV charging stations installed by 2022. This follows the announcement that they also want to ban the sale of new traditional petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. These measures are to try to ensure that the UK meets its target of being Net Zero by 2050, but what does this mean for consumers and are these measures realistic?
The time it takes to charge an electric car is something that needs to be considered when installing these EV charging points as the time can vary from 30 minutes to 12 hours. Charging time depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A typical electric car (60kWh battery) takes just under 8 hours to charge with a 7kW charging point. If a customer is stopping on a long journey, this charge time needs to be considered. Rapid charging points need to be installed, as it’s not realistic for consumers to wait 8 hours for a full car charge before continuing their journey.
What are the costs involved?
The average cost for installing an EV charging point is £800 however there is financial help that is available from the Government. The Government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme provides homeowners with a grant funding of £350 per point or up to 75% towards the cost of installing the charging point within properties across the UK, whichever is lowest. These measures will also have an impact on workplaces too and many businesses will need to look into EV charging points for their employees. Similar to the Electric Homecharge Scheme, the Government offers businesses financial support to install charge points under the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS).
The number of charging points currently available within the UK varies depending on your location, for example, the East and Southwest of England currently only have 18% of the chargers that are estimated to be needed by 2025. Some places such as Swindon and Brentwood currently have less than 5%. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that England will lead the world in mandating building regulations to install electric vehicle points from next year. Up to 145,000 extra charge points will be installed across England each year thanks to these regulations.
