In order to make improvements across the Electricity industry, the government set up a project to roll out the fitting of Smart Meters to most Domestic and Microbusiness customers, by early 2019.
Unfortunately, there have been a number of issues which have pushed this back until the end of 2024.
A Smart Meter means, the amount of Electricity used is automatically sent to the energy supplier. No more manual meter reads and accurate billing.
Smart Meters are split between SMETS1 and SMETS2.
SMETS1 were more commonly fitted and use a form of communication which can mean, when there is a change of energy supplier, they cannot access the data. The Smart Meter reverts back to requiring the submission of manual reads.
By using a different communication method (DCC), SMETS2 avoid this issue.
The first solution to resolve this, will be an attempt to move each SMETS1 onto DCC. This will likely be done remotely and as of January 2020, be completed by the end of 2021.
Where this fails, Energy suppliers will be required to change the meter to a SMETS2.
